It does seem to imply that compression will be licensed separately. I'd wait until the actual product release though, things changes all the time! :-)Robert Freemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11021657343453201495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11463104.post-84696600443598984992007-08-08T02:43:00.000-07:002007-08-08T02:43:00.000-07:00Seehttp://www.oracle.com/technology/products/datab...See

http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/oracle11g/pdf/advanced-compression-whitepaper.pdf

Cheers

StefUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05202880078855273570noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11463104.post-23536560920796356962007-08-03T10:43:00.000-07:002007-08-03T10:43:00.000-07:00Performance is going to vary based on a number of ...Performance is going to vary based on a number of factors. With RMAN compression in 10g we saw phenomenal improvements in backup times at the expense of CPU of course.

Testing on my system showed marked performance improvements on SELECT queries when using compression, and space savings that were just short of spectacular (in some cases I saw 90% compression!).

I've not fully exercised the DML side of this question... yet. I'll see if I can find some time to do that and post some results.Robert Freemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11021657343453201495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11463104.post-47737565763421908352007-08-03T10:38:00.000-07:002007-08-03T10:38:00.000-07:00I can't address the licensing issues. Currently compression is not a separately licensed product, so I don't know why this new feature would change that.Robert Freemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11021657343453201495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11463104.post-9421694031433001622007-08-03T06:51:00.000-07:002007-08-03T06:51:00.000-07:00Robert,Have you had a chance to look at the CPU re...Robert,

Have you had a chance to look at the CPU resource hit, due to compression?
